Recycling intentions let down by govt

Alternative waste disposal methods need to play a greater role if Britain is to lower its landfill burden, it has been claimed.Bemoaning the recent hike in landfill tax, the Guardian claimed that higher taxation rates would not necessarily correspond to lower waste creation, claiming instead that alternatives needed to be spelt out to people. Sink waste disposal units from brands such as InSinkErator are one of the sustainable options open to people and alongside recycling and composting, some local councils across the UK are encouraging the use of sink-mounted systems through subsidies on purchase. But the Guardian claimed that people were unaware of some of the options available to them, leaving the country unable to carry through its increasing will to recycle and get waste under control. The newspaper cited Committee of Public Accounts findings which recently suggested that 57 per cent of people are committed recyclers, meaning that peoples good intentions are not being reflected in the options available to them.Whether or not old electrical goods can be taken back to shops for disposal was highlighted as an area of recycling uncertainty.
