LEDs make accident hotspot safer for children

A revolutionary new lighting system is being tested by Leicestershire county council where LED lighting will be used to power lamps at zebra crossings to make them easier to see for drivers. The 3,500 upgrade will use 70 per cent less power than standard bulbs found in the famous yellow Belisha beacons at the crossings, improving environmentally-friendly credentials further with a light-sensitive dimming system and by possessing a 100,000-hour lifetime. After a ten-year-old boy was knocked over in 2002 as well as a lollipop lady in 2004, the council decided to install the zebra crossing but despite the move, drivers still found the crossing difficult to see, particularly on sunny days.Highways team leader Ian Vears said that the access to this new lighting was the perfect way to rectify the situation and added It increases driver awareness by sending out a much clearer light, especially during daylight hours. After two weeks, it seems to be working well and we will consider using it across Leicestershire.Safety updates around the world now include LEDs, including upgrades to railroad crossings in Wisconsin as the rising and setting sun was obscuring all other types of lighting used previously.ADNFCR-1177-ID-18702772-ADNFCR
