Kitchens unlikely to meet efficiency targets

Kitchen renovators have been warned that unless various measures are introduced, the governments target of making all new homes zero carbon from 2016 is unlikely to be fulfilled.Duncan Melville, partner at EC Harris, an international consultancy in construction planning, said that although the targets are technically achievable, significant changes - such as access to mortgage finance and affordable land - need to be introduced. He added that there is a danger that the extra pressure of low carbon targets could disincentivise house building at a time when output remains historically low.We have got a challenge here between trying to support the additional housing which is needed, versus making sure it is sustainable with the aspirations that we have set ourselves, Mr Melville said at a Sustainability Now event. The comments follow recent guidance from Victoria Loustalot of takepart.com, who suggested that homeowners can do their bit for the environment simply by turning off kitchen taps as soon as possible.
