Homeowners can reduce their impact on the environment by recycling water from the kitchen sink and shower, it has been claimed. In an article on care2.com, environmentalist Jasmine Greene sets out a number of ways that people can make a difference in 2011.She notes that each day, a person uses an average of 123 gallons of water, 50-80 per cent of which is grey water.Grey water, simply put, is water that contains limited pollutants and comes from showers, laundry and kitchen sinks, she said. These waters generally make their way out to rivers or streams, which can have adverse effects on the ecology of these small bodies of water.Ms Greene suggested that this grey water can be recycled by putting a collection basin in a sink or shower before using its contents to water garden plants. She commented that while the nitrates and phosphates in the water may not be good for water streams, they are often great for growing plants.
