Kitchen rebuild employs carbon-absorbant Hemcrete

A kitchen extension project can successfully integrate energy efficient walling made of Hemcrete, according to Period Living.A writer for the publication, Marianne Suhr, opted for the sustainable product in her own kitchen rebuild project, finding that there were more pros than cons when using it.Ms Suhr claimed that Hemcrete was a viable eco alternative to cavity wall insulation, as the hemp (which is mixed with lime-based binder to form the material) absorbs carbon as it grows making it more environmentally-friendly than most materials. She said that complications occurred during the project as the material needed to be mixed on site and heavy rain set things back, but concluded that the build project had mostly gone to plan. Advice for others on how best to manage a kitchen build project involved a seasonal warning, with homeowners told to start in the spring, in order to avoid the wettest weather, while time was needed to choose kitchen appliances like sinks and taps.As well as absorbing carbon, Hemcrete is said to provide a high standard of insulation, while remaining airtight and permeable to vapour.
