Installing food waste disposal units would cut 546 million bill

UK householders spend a staggering 546 million on bin bags every year, a bill that could be hugely reduced if more food waste disposal units were installed in homes. This is the conclusion of a new report which found that UK residents throw away 5.4 billion refuse sacs every year, which averages at four per household per week. The study, by food waste disposal unit manufacturer In-Sink-Erator, found that the UKs 26 million homes account for 104 million bin bags every week. Based on a cost of 11 pence per bag, it says that the annual bill for householders for waste disposal, on top of council tax payments, is 22.88.Ashley Munden, In-Sink-Erators UK sales and marketing director, says the impact on the environment is just as big a problem. If householders installed a simple, basic domestic waste disposal unit in their home, it would save the country a fortune on refuse bags, he said.More importantly, it would massively cut the reliance on landfill in the UK, a huge environmental issue right now. Some 20 per cent of all landfill is food waste - exactly what food waste disposers are designed to harmlessly get rid of.
