House-hunters should follow etiquette

Many people are curious about the state of kitchen appliances, bathroom installations and living room couches, but property-seekers have been urged to follow a series of etiquette tips when scrutinising a prospective home.Property specialist Country Life claimed that different rules applied depending on whether the sellers were present, but affirmed that all property-seekers should avoid being too pushy even in the current buyers market. The site suggested that house-hunters were well within their rights to look out for details such as the quality of fittings, kitchen worktops and furniture, but claimed that rug-lifting and curtain-twitching should be kept to a minimum if a vendor is present.Surveyors are responsible for checking the quality of the property after an offer is accepted, Country Life added, explaining additionally that taking measurements and discussing renovation plans was also premature before tabling an offer. Also discouraged was the use of a camera, or any ambitious plans to rework the house that suggested a distaste for its current state all of which could offend the seller and make a deal less likely. People visiting a potential new home will often ask to see the kitchen first, but judging from Country Lifes etiquette guide, plans to install a new state-of the art kitchen sink from Franke or to rework the countertops should be kept to oneself until a deal is in place.
