Granite worktops perfectly safe

Granite worktops do not pose any health risks when used in kitchen designs, a new study has revealed. The Marble Institute of America (MIA) has conducted the largest ever scientific study into granite, following recent claims that the material emits dangerous levels of radiation in the form of radon gas.Openly disputing the claim, the MIA revealed its own research which found lower than average levels of radon in granite. The organisation conducted 400 different tests on 115 types of granite in order to demonstrate its safety.Homeowners are exposed to less radon than the European Commission maximum limit based on the assumption that people spend four hours a day six inches away from kitchen worktops.Interestingly, the study found that the positioning of the stone also makes it safer. In practice, granite countertops are in a horizontal position, while a person is typically seated or standing. Accounting for the distance and horizontal position of a stone countertop relative to a person would result in lower actual doses, the report explained. This will no doubt come as good news to homeowners who have chosen granite worktops to complement stainless steel sinks and taps.
