Families now spend more waking hours in their kitchens than in any other room in the house. The average kitchen has almost doubled in size since the 1920s, with kitchens now an average 121 square feet compared to 65 square feet a century ago, according to research experts Magnet.Todays kitchens are the hub of family life, acting as a social and dining rooms as well as the centre of food preparation and cooking. Most families now spend two hours of relaxation time in the kitchen per day, compared to one-and-a-half hours in the lounge. As well as all the usual items you would expect to find in a kitchen, such as oven, microwave, sink and taps, most modern kitchens also have a flat-screen TV, dining area, CD/MP3 player and DAB radio. We also spend more money on decorating our kitchen than any other room in the home, averaging 19,000 for a kitchen remodel compared to 6,000 for the lounge.Magnet spokesman Marco Rossi said Todays kitchen is often the biggest room in the house and, in terms of the value of the equipment and decor we have in them, certainly the most expensive. It is very much now the hub of modern family life, with its own TV and stereo system.
