Eco-towns floundering as consultation finds one site suitable

Posted by Sinks on 27th Jun 2017

The widely-publicised eco-towns initiative has been put in jeopardy with the announcement that only one site out of a proposed 12 has satisfied the relevant consultation criteria. The top-rated site, at Rackheath near Norwich, was controversially added to the original cohort of sites by housing minister Margret Beckett, all of which had not been cleared as suitable for the proposed developments.Rackheath was the only site to receive an A-grading, with others being classified as needing improvement to bring them up to scratch.Eco-towns have found backing from several quarters, including the Trades Union Congress (TUC).General secretary of the TUC, Brendan Barber, said Everyone in the UK should be able to afford decent housing, but for many people renting a good quality flat or owning their own home remains a distant dream. We therefore welcome the governments plans to build five new eco-towns. More good quality, environmentally-friendly homes must be built and quickly.A second consultation on the scheme is expected to announce its findings sometime in March or April next year.Stoke-on-Trent college has become the only educational establishment with working eco-home models on site with which to educate students, after they began a challenge to build two such homes in the space of four days.ADNFCR-1321-ID-18862384-ADNFCR
