An interior designer created an award-winning kitchen by integrating modern, urban features in a 19th century home.Joanne Hudson won the 2010 Sub-Zero and Wolf kitchen design contest in the US with a design which she said had been respectful of the architectural space of the classic building, philly.com reported.Ms Hudson explained that she had used dark cabinets in the room to reference the past. However, to avoid creating a very dark room, she also added some raven-stained maple cabinets, a stone floor and marble countertops in the kitchen sink and food preparation areas. To ensure the room would be highly functional, the designer installed a butlers pantry for storing china and separate work stations for preparing food, cleaning, and entertaining. These included two islands with an ice maker, a wine cooler, and stools for guests.Kitchen renovator Michael Kitchener recently told North Side News that homeowners should consider their needs in older age when selecting kitchen appliances and layouts.
