Outdoor kitchens could soon be making their assault on UK home design after a US competition successfully showcased the best ways to integrate cooking facilities into garden areas. American designers are often at the forefront of inventive techniques for maximising home areas, but the Oasis Award for Outdoor Kitchen Design competition, reported by Kitchen and Bath Design News, was more about luxury than space efficiency. The award looked to single out design feats that went beyond outdoor grill installation but also sought to integrate luxury features like freezers, icemakers, pizza ovens and even martini bars. Pete Georgiadis, president of Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet, sponsors of the competition, said This award celebrates the unlimited creativity that designers are bringing to outdoor entertaining spaces. The creativity in question was reportedly shown by winning entrant Jon van Allen from McHale Landscape Design, whose outdoor pavilion-style design brought all the luxuries of the indoor kitchen to the outdoor environment. The area was roofed and screened, while graced with a complete fireplace and flat-screen television for a luxury feel, and primed for food preparation through a double draw refrigerator, a lobster boiler and many other essentials for lavish outdoor entertaining.
