Kitchen sink backsplashes can be "eye-catching"

Mixing up the shapes and sizes of tiles in a kitchen sink backsplash area could add visual appeal to food preparation environments, it has been claimed. Interior design columnist Debbie Travis, writing for North Island Midweek, noted that the latest trend in mosaic tiles is combining small circle and oval shapes which are set in 12 inch easy-installation squares. These tiles are made from glass, stone, ceramics and metals and come in bright jewel tones as well as muted earth shades, white, cream, gray and black, she stated, adding that the finished article will be inconsistent and eye-catching. Before making a large-scale purchase it is important to take samples home from the shop to be sure of how they look, Ms Travis advised. She also recommended taking into consideration how kitchen lighting will affect the gloss on a kitchen backsplash, with some tiles allowing colours and hues to reflect more easily. Last month, the Holland Sentinel reported that installing a new backsplash is a cost-effective home upgrade.
