Kitchen owners innovate with custom-made cabinets

A couple designed a functional kitchen around their needs by creating their own furniture. Byron and Audrey Sabin told the Herald Bulletin that the focus for this redesign was the kitchen cabinets, which Mr Sabin fashioned out of hickory wood from a tree that died in his front garden. To add more workspace, the couple installed a kitchen island which incorporated the cabinets. As a special feature, Mr Sabin designed the cabinets to have a pull-out drawer that makes it easier to reach items at the back.In addition, the couple innovated in the design of their other kitchen drawers, which they decided should store the crockery. As a result, the kitchen is dominated by long drawers which have movable pegs inside them to keep the plates, bowls, and glasses separated. Discussing kitchen convenience, a recent survey of designers by the National Kitchen Bath Association suggested that standard kitchen tap designs will be replaced by more flexible alternatives this year as kitchen functions improve further.
