DIY enthusiasts have been told while tackling boilers and wiring can be dangerous and costly, trying to fix blockages in kitchen sinks should be well within their range.Experts from the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC) said that modest DIY work could be a good way to revamp a home, but urged caution as to the costs and dangers of embarking on more ambitious projects.Andrew Leech, technical consultant to the NHIC, said You can tackle modest projects like plumbing in a bath or a sink, theres no particular problems there.He added that people were capable of mastering plumbing risks Youve always got to remember to turn the water off at the mains, so that you dont get flooded. But that should be quite within the capabilities of most people. However, NHIC advice did not stretch so far as to endorse electrical meddling or attempts to carry out any repair work on a boiler, claiming that the dangers were too great and required the use of expert advice or services.According to Halifax, 750,000 Brits have damaged their property when trying to carry out DIY work, making the NHIC advice particularly pertinent to those taking on DIY projects as an intended means of saving money.
